Day-Out-of-Days (DOoD) Report for Filmmakers

Thoolie Team

A Day-Out-of-Days (DoOD) report is one of the most essential scheduling tools in film and television production. Used by assistant directors and producers, it shows exactly when each cast member works, travels, or is on hold throughout the shooting schedule.

If you’re producing an indie film, understanding (and using) a DOoD is critical for budgeting, scheduling, and SAG-AFTRA compliance.

What Is a Day-Out-of-Days?

The DOoD is a chart that tracks each actor’s employment status for every day of the shoot. It ensures the production team knows:

  • Which days each actor is working.
  • Which days they are traveling or on hold.
  • Their first and last workdays.
  • The total number of days they must be paid.

Typically, the 1st Assistant Director (1st AD) generates the DOoD using software like Movie Magic Scheduling or Gorilla.

Why It Matters for Indie Filmmakers

  • Budgeting: Calculate exactly how many days to pay each actor.
  • Logistics: Plan travel, lodging, and call sheets efficiently.
  • Union Compliance: Confirm contracts align with SAG-AFTRA rules (consecutive days, turnaround times, etc.).
  • Clarity: Prevent confusion between producers, ADs, accountants, and talent.

Common DOoD Codes

The DoOD uses shorthand codes to mark each day:

  • W = Work
  • H = Hold (paid but not working)
  • T = Travel
  • F = First day of work
  • L = Last day of work
  • SW = Start Work
  • WF = Work Finish
  • SWF = Start-Work-Finish (one-day hire)
